Steel Shafts
Who is better for my Golf? Golf Shafts Graphite or Steel Golf Shafts?
Author: Jeff Summitt
Shafts for golf clubs are primarily made of steel or graphite. Trees are made of steel from a steel alloy carbon and protection of chromium is applied to prevent rusting. A graphite shaft can also be called a composite shaft because it is multiple layers of carbon fiber and epoxy resin holding the layers together. There are even some shafts of steel and graphite. However, you're probably wondering what which is best for you?
Steel shafts have been used for golf clubs since the 1920s, although earlier versions can be
dating from the early 20th century. Graphite shafts are a relatively new golf equipment, which dates from the late 1960s, but not gain widespread acceptance until the mid-1980s. These two materials are used for some of the following reasons.
Steel shafts are less expensive to manufacturer and easily able to make coherent tree to tree. Steel shafts are made from a material unique, creating a new model is limited to geometry changes in the shaft as the outer diameter along its "all length, wall thickness, the distance between each step (unless it is a progressive tree) and using other metals (such as chromium, vanadium and nickel) in the alloys. Premium steel shafts cost about the same as low-end graphite shafts.
Graphite shafts were originally designed to provide an alternative to the lightweight steel shafts. However, there are trees of graphite which weigh more than some models steel, but this is very rare. Steel trees range from about 90g to 130g, while the graphite shafts can be a little as 39g. The most popular of the range weight graphite shafts for woods is 60-70 grams for iron and the weight of the tree is closer to 70 – 80 grams. One of the biggest advantages to graphite shafts is their weight.
Since graphite shafts are generally lighter than steel shafts, there is a potential for greater distance, because in May they be able to went a little faster. Most graphite shafted clubs are assembled in greater length than the standard steel-shafted clubs. Golfers tend to be less consistent finding in May of steel trees to give them greater control. But for golfers, such as women and the elderly, who need to increase the length to better appreciate the game, graphite trees are an alternative.
Another advantage of graphite shafts to steel is a design perspective. As already mentioned, the graphite shafts are manufactured from multiple layers of carbon fiber. Each layer can be a other module (strength) and material can be applied at different angles to contribute independently of the torsional stiffness or reduction of the length of the tree. This allows graphite shaft manufactures almost limitless possibilities in new models.
Because of the different materials that could be used in the manufacture of the Golf Shaft, it is much broader range of prices too. A little graphite shaft in May cost $ 10.00, while the most expensive tree can cost up to $ 1000.00! Although most of the graphite shafts that are normally $ 10 – $ 90 range. Wait a club with a graphite shaft to cost more than a steel shaft.
This is one reason why you so that the majority of golfers have both steel and graphite shafted clubs in their bag. Over 90% of all drivers have graphite shafts. This is because the driver is designed for maximum distance and is much larger and easier to hit than they were only a few years ago. For fairway woods, more than 80% are equipped with graphite shafts as players tend to match the driver with the same type of tree. Golfers who tend to hit the ball far and / or need more control of steel May find to their liking. There are a number of lightweight steel shafts available as an alternative to graphite.
Irons and corners are usually the opposite of the tree in the choice of material. Approximately 75% of irons sold today are sold with shafts steel. The main reason for the choice of steel in May will be an economic factor as the irons and wedges represent a large percentage of clubs in the bag. The other reason which players choose the steel in their irons, wedges is rather that the increase of distance, especially among the strongest of individuals. However, there are a number of wells in iron grade graphite which come in all different weights and stiffness to match nearly every golfer.
The choice between steel or graphite shafts, you will be based on whether you are looking at greater distances or not. A greater distance will have a more great cost, not only economic, but for those who are not doing their very simple ball, hit the ball over in May, even aggravate the problem. Be sure to choose wisely based on your personal goals and current trends.
