How to clean an antique wooden chest?
I just recently moved into a house built in 1929, the owner had lived 30 years and was a passionate collector of antiques from the period. It left a big Drese / Burea in the cellar. Its dark wood, beautiful! We want mount to the floor for decoration, but its heavy, so we must make sure to clean well in the basement (to make you clean enough to be spotlight). It has some scratches, missing one handle, and very very dusty. I know there's probably not worth it, we just want to clean and place in our dining room. I do not know how to describe the markings on the front but its water brands as they are darker than wood. I cleaned with pledge and they are gone, but it dries, it was back! What do you suggest to clean the marks, if they could delaminate. What is a good way to get a lot of dust? I realize pledge isn't probably a good idea …. We arent willing to spend much money, so the lowest possible price!
Formby has a wood cleaning kit. I used it, and it really worked well. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowe's. Scott's Liquid Gold furniture also cleans very well. Then, for any scratches and that they have the glaze pencils that are the color of different wood species and can be used to touch up spots on the furniture. Good Luck, I hope this helps.
