What is the difference between the brake pads and brake?

I need my rear brakes replaced. My friend asked to buy the parts and he can do the work for me. But the guy at Auto Zone asked if I needed of brake pads or shoes for my 2004 Pontiac Sunfire. I did not know what to say. So what's the difference?

Okay, Here's what you need to look. You probably have shoes in the back, if not an updated version of car If you look forward through your rim, you will see a shiny metal disc that looks like it grooves like a vinyl record. Now, if you need pads, it will be exactly the same thing in the back. If you need shoes, you will see what is called a drum, which is rusty or black. It will not be brilliant. If you take your wheels off, it will be even easier to say because the front is literally a disc, and the back is obviously either a disc or a literal obviously drum. The shoes are inside the drum, and platelets are visible by looking at your brake caliper on your disc. They are what push the disc. You can not see the shoes, without taking away from the drum. Then you will see one or the other and know the difference. Discrimination is pads, is a drum shoes.
