Why does Lynx have black tufts on their ears?
Why does Lynx have black tufts on their ears? Does it have a function? Something to do with their balance?
I recently visited Polar Zoo in Norway, and I took some photos of Lynxs, and I began to wonder why they had black tufts on their ears.
There are a few theories, but no one really knows for certain. The most common guesses are that the tufts help with hearing and/or communication.
The tufts may act as vibration sensors, helping the cats to detect noises that are behind them. This is theoretically possible, but unlikely because the hairs of the tuft are not connected to any specialized sensory cells.
Cats will sometimes use different ear positions to communicate their mood to other cats. It is possible that black tufts stand out against a snowy background and enable lynxes to communicate from farther away. Again, this is a possibility, but if two lynxes are close enough to see one another, they probably already know the other’s gender and reproductive state from chemical communication (urine marking). Two males will either fight or avoid each other, two females will probably avoid each other, and a male and a female will either breed or avoid each other.
Basically, this is the long way of saying “I don’t know.”
